Scholarship Program

Songwriters can be part of Songkites by applying for a scholarship.  These scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded to promising young songwriters who demonstrate commitment to the values of originality, creativity and community.  Songkites works with local and international partners to fund these scholarships, the majority of which are companies and organisations who share a passion for creative development.  These partners are not just involved at a funding level.  They build working relationships with the songwriters, resulting in mutually beneficial promotion and valuable industry experience.

What is it

What is it

the curriculum

The scholarship program focuses on leadership, musical skill development, performance techniques, songwriting skills, recording experience, teamwork, career planning, personal development and creativity.  These focus areas are delivered in group workshops, individual coaching, recording sessions, performances and events.  Past graduates of the Songkites program act as mentors for the new participants, guiding them and offering opportunities for performance and collaboration.

Songkites is run by Euan Gray and Carrie Herbert, both musicians and songwriters with decades of experience in the fields of music and arts therapy.  The curriculum is bi-lingual with the participants helping each other to understand the concepts as well as through professional translation.

Songwriting is a very personal activity and those who practice it may at times feel vulnerable and struggle with the challenges of public expression and family expectations.  Songkites is unique in that it foregrounds and upholds the values of trust, community, safety and personal development.  When these values are overlooked, which they too often are, creativity is restricted and songwriters burn out - depriving the world and themselves of great music.

At the end of the program, participants receive a certificate, a recording of their song and a life-time songkites membership.  Most importantly, they become part of a growing community of supportive songwriters.
